Christian Fennesz changed everything with his 2001 album “Endless Summer”—not to be confused with the Beach Boys release, though the name is no coincidence. The album was a pastiche of static, harsh noises, and looped, treated guitar sounds. To put it briefly, it really made an impression on people. To put it not so briefly, go read some of the glowing reviews or just listen for yourself.
Now Fennesz is prepping for “Bécs,” his latest album and first since 2008’s “Black Sea.” Today Fennesz has released a track off the album, following the layered noise of “The Liar” from earlier this month. The new track is called “Static Kings” and is full of underwater-guitar sounds that sound be familiar to fans of “Endless Summer.” Across about six minutes, the track accelerates in intensity before closing with a wandering, loopy arpeggio and drifting off entirely. But even throughout the reverberating washes of the track proper, a sense of very traditional melody and pop accessibility is always prevalent, making “Static Kings” a bit more accessible than some Fennesz tracks.
With the popularity of experimental and avant garde acts like Sigur Rós or Aphex Twin, it’s no longer unthinkable that we could see a release like this on a “traditional” label, but “Bécs” will be released on legendary experimental label Editions Mego on April 28th. Stream “Static Kings” below, and make sure to put on a nice pair of headphones first.
